Tips for Filipino voters for the 2025 midterm elections
With the much-awaited midterm elections happening, Filipino voters are already feeling the pressure of what May 12 will be like. This election for the senate, congressional, and local posts is different from 2022, as its turnout will be reflective—in a way—of how Filipinos perceive the challenges our country has faced in recent months.
Amid the jovial atmosphere of the campaign season and the seemingly endless platforms candidates share with constituents, one thing, however, does not change. We always ask ourselves the same question: Who should we vote for? Ironically, though, we also have the same answer to this time and again: 1) those with good platforms; 2) those who will help resolve the issues of our time; and 3) those whose campaign tactics work for us.
With color and affiliation-based appeal, which has been more integral today than ever, here are some ways on how we can properly discern who deserves our vote:
Checking one’s credentials is important. This is overlooked, but it is so vital as it is indicative of whether or not a candidate is capable of fulfilling his or her duties should he or she be elected.
Good-sounding platforms can be tricky. At times, if one is truly analytical, there are numerous platforms being shared that are simply good to the ears, yet lack expounding. It is important that we get to be receptive to platforms that are tangible enough to be realized.
Choose candidates who have a stand on issues. Given that they will represent the interests of Filipinos, candidates with a proper stand or take on issues should have our support. After all, if they cannot take a stand on issues confronting us, how can they properly serve and promote the interests of the greater whole?
Inclusive leadership. Over time, we have already encountered candidates who promised not to forget us should they win the post. Then again, however, things change when they have already gotten what they are aiming for. We must choose leaders who know how to ensure that no one is left behind—this is of the essence today.
Good governance over politicking. With the multifaceted challenges we face today as a nation, it is imperative that we elect leaders who are not just good politicians but also adhere to the principles of good governance. There are already a lot of wicked problems we face today, including corruption, inflation, and even climate change. Let us not contribute to these anymore.
The times we live in are undoubtedly challenging, hence the more important our votes are. A vote can lead the nation to continuous betterment or ruin, so being wise on whom to vote matters. There is nothing wrong with asking yourself the same question again as you try to discern, but how the answer will be – the same or different – lies in your hands.
