Pantone Color of the Year 2021 ushers in new hope

The uplifting union of Ultimate Gray and Illuminating as the Pantone Color of the Year 2021 brings a message of strength and hopefulness for a brand new year.

Annually, the Pantone Color Institute selects one to two colors to be named as the Pantone Color of the Year. The institution is the specialist unit that highlights the top seasonal runway colors, forecasts global color trends, and advises color for product and brand visual identity.

According to the Institute, the marriage of the two independent colors PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating shows how different elements come together to support one another. The cheerful Illuminating – which carries a tint of yellow – brings a warm shade and solar power amid the solid and dependable elements of Ultimate Gray which is reminiscent of beach pebbles and natural elements that have weathered the test of time.

“The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope,” said The Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman. “We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”

The Pantone Color of the Year has highly influenced product development and purchasing in various industries for over 20 years. And in 2021, the chosen color is set to encapsulate a promise of brighter days to overcome uncertainty.

The selection process for the Pantone Color of the Year undergoes meticulous trend analysis spearheaded by the institution’s team of color experts. It seeks new color influences in a global scale that encompass what’s in and popular in the entertainment and film, art, fashion, design and travel industries, as well as new technologies, lifestyles, playstyles and socio-economic conditions, among many others.

The 2021 fashion industry depicts the desire to cope with the new normal, as comfort, versatility and function stand as key trends. Fashion Design and Merchandising expert Christine Benet, the associate dean for Environment Studies Cluster of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde School of Design and Arts, reveals that loungewear will be popular in 2021.

The demand for extreme colors is balanced with the light and bright palettes and accessories. Scarves or shawls, footwear, purses, or layers in the full shades of Illuminating bring energy to a backdrop of the composed Ultimate Gray. This combination creates a high visibility contrast that makes it ideal for outerwear and activewear.

“Given the general sentiment of consumers, the two colors reflect a strong feeling of yearning for stability during these trying times,” Benet said.

The new pair also projects a dramatic statement in the beauty scene, whether it be in hair, nails and makeup.  In home decor, exterior finishes in the solid foundation of Ultimate Gray are best juxtaposed with home accoutrements such as table linens, sheets, and tabletops in dashing Illuminating.

The high visibility and reflectivity of the duo likewise makes for headturning messages perfect for graphic designs and packaging layouts. Much like in the other visual industries, the Illuminating renders a friendly approach in the reliability and wisdom posited by the Ultimate Gray.
